There are two new trios of posters for The Dark Knight Rises, one for the U.S. market and one for International release.  Those distinctions may have met something before the internet, but today, we all enjoy both.  Christian Bale as Batman, Tom Hardy as Bane in a starker costume than the open tan trench we have seen, and Anne Hathaway in the regrettable goggles but with enough detail now showing in the texture of her costume that we see its similarity to Batman’s.  Hmmm.

Maybe to make it up to her, there is one additional poster featuring Catwoman, from the knee down.  Reowl.

Batman Merch: Bane shirts aren’t TDKR but they’re better than the first wave of Dark Knight Rises stuff we’ve seen

There is a folder on our harddrive in the Gotham Trending office called “Merchandise Hell.”   We’re not proud of the title, but the fact is nobody wants to follow those links and write up bits on the New 52 busts, the latest round of Arkham City figures, or DC Direct’s 12″ statues for The Dark Knight Rises.

It’s not just that a lot of the stuff is hideous, it’s not just that DC was obviously kept in the dark about Catwoman’s real TDKR costume but didn’t let that stop them since they went into production on last summer’s first photo with the goggles and no ears, it’s not just that Pop Heroes vinyl Bane looks like her cat’s chew toy, it’s that no item is so horrible that the article, blog or website won’t fawn over it.   One or two of these embarrassments to the fandom can be shrugged off, but a steady diet is a strain.

You can imagine our delight, then, at this set of Bane-inspired t-shirts from Superhero Hype.  They’re all based on the comic book Bane from Knightfall, but they’re nice shirts.  There’s nothing wrong with them.  I just ordered a “Got Venom.”

More than offering up a nice collection of shirts, they have restored our faith in the fandom.  Not everyone is still chugging that year-old Kool-Ade that Anne Hathaway is playing Selina Kyle who isn’t Catwoman.

With the expected glut of Top Everything of 2011 lists and post-holiday lull in news, there was a fallback on older pictures and stories, such as Christian Bale “looking incredibly GQ as Bruce Wayne” and pre-TDKR Anne Hathaway looking unspeakably sexy in a see-through blouse, as well as set photos of Tom Hardy’s Bane from the location shooting in Pittsburgh, and a smattering of old stories on the Batmobile and Arkham City disappointments.  The only exception was the LA Times lack of discretion spoiling a scene from The Dark  Knight Rises just to set the scene for an Anne Hathaway interview.

The Real and Fake Official Catwoman pic from The Dark Knight Rises

Not 24 hours after the release of a picture of Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle through the Warner Bros Website and some awesome action shots from the location shooting in Pittsburgh, the blogosphere went crazy imagining a second official photo had been released.  One small problem, it’s a fake,  photoshopped from a Lara Croft cosplay photo.

Not surprising really: the word was sexy.  The combination of the words Catwoman and sexy at Comic Con, Anne Hathaway and sexy in her Marie Claire photos, sexier still working a red carpet in a see-through blouse, dominated the week’s blog posts, social media and searches, even knocking photos and spoiler video from The Dark Knight Rises location shooting in Pittsburgh out of the top spots.  First look at Bane in full costume: not on the list.  First Look at Marion Cotillard on set as Miranda Tate: not on the list. Batman/Bane fight #9.  Bale in the Batsuit, #4.

The week saw the much anticipated release of The Real, Official, Accept No Substitutes ACTUAL teaser trailer for The Dark Knight Rises, a (possibly staged) peek at the Batmobile as TDKR Production wheeled into Pittsburgh to begin location shooting, the sale of iconic Batman movie memorabilia including a Bane mask and Jim Carrey’s riddler hat and cane, AND the first look at the Batman ’89 Hot Toys line for Comic Con.  Yet Catwoman astonishingly held 4 places on the top ten list: Catwoman in DC Comics reboot, Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises and Catwoman in Arkham City.  Way to go, Miss Kitty.

Did Anne Hathaway really punch a stuntman? Or is it a smokescreen to hide leaked Catwoman costume for The Dark Knight Rises

A little bird told Gotham Trending that a photo appeared this morning of Anne Hathaway in the Catwoman costume for The Dark Knight Rises.  The real costume, the final costume, and that this picture vanished before it could be shared.

GT suspects the story of Hathaway punching a stuntman was invented to dominate the words “Anne Hathaway” and “Catwoman” in the twitterverse while the leak was plugged.

Which is fine with this reporter.  Good things are worth waiting for.  Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman is worth waiting for.
