New Dark Knight Rises Toys revealed and ready for preorder from Mattel, it’s John Blake and Alfred Figures

the-dark-knight-rises-merchandise-action-figuresWe at Gotham Trending are old enough to remember Robert Wuhl on a talk show promoting the Tim Burton Batman in 1989.  Talking about his cut of the merchandise, any action figures that depicted the image of his character Alexander Knox he said “Oh yeah, I’m sure every kid is going to want The Reporter Doll.”  Times may have changed.  IGN is reporting the newest action figures announced by Mattel and available for pre-order.

Mattel has just revealed two more The Dark Knight Rises action figures from their Movie Masters toy line. Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Gotham City cop John Blake and Michael Caine’s Alfred Pennyworth will be joining the company’s Batman, Bane and Catwoman figures.

The Dark Knight Rises is Christopher Nolan’s third and final installment of his Batman trilogy, starring Christian Bale (Batman/Bruce Wayne), Anne Hathaway (Selina Kyle/Catwoman), Tom Hardy (Bane), Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, and other Nolan alums Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard, to be released by Warner Bros. July 2012

Batman Merch: Bane shirts aren’t TDKR but they’re better than the first wave of Dark Knight Rises stuff we’ve seen

There is a folder on our harddrive in the Gotham Trending office called “Merchandise Hell.”   We’re not proud of the title, but the fact is nobody wants to follow those links and write up bits on the New 52 busts, the latest round of Arkham City figures, or DC Direct’s 12″ statues for The Dark Knight Rises.

the-dark-knight-rises-merch-bane-a-chew-toy-for-catwomans-catsIt’s not just that a lot of the stuff is hideous, it’s not just that DC was obviously kept in the dark about Catwoman’s real TDKR costume but didn’t let that stop them since they went into production on last summer’s first photo with the goggles and no ears, it’s not just that Pop Heroes vinyl Bane looks like her cat’s chew toy, it’s that no item is so horrible that the article, blog or website won’t fawn over it.   One or two of these embarrassments to the fandom can be shrugged off, but a steady diet is a strain.

You can imagine our delight, then, at this set of Bane-inspired t-shirts from Superhero Hype.  They’re all based on the comic book Bane from Knightfall, but they’re nice shirts.  There’s nothing wrong with them.  I just ordered a “Got Venom.”

More than offering up a nice collection of shirts, they have restored our faith in the fandom.  Not everyone is still chugging that year-old Kool-Ade that Anne Hathaway is playing Selina Kyle who isn’t Catwoman.

Batman Merch: Golden Age Batman, Joker, Silver Age Batgirl, in Batman Legacy series from Mattel

We’re all for the Golden Age Batman and Joker, and the Silver Age Batgirl is certainly a welcome offering to those of us who remember the wonderful Batman Family comics featuring Barbara’s Batgirl and Dick Grayson’s Robin.  Mr. Freeze, well fine.  But we can’t figure out the thinking at Action Figure World with that last  comment.

Batman Action Figures Legacy Series Golden Age Batman, Golden Age Joker

We’ve got Golden Age JOKER, Silver Age MR. FREEZE and Modern Age BATMAN in the first series of BATMAN LEGACY figure from Mattel. If you’ve been upset by the whole reboot thing, then you might appreciate a throwback to the way things were–if only in one of these great figures. Check them out, available individually or as a 3-figure set.

And if you like those, then you might want to pre-order one of the next series, which includes Golden Age Batman, Silver Age Batgirl and Modern Age (of course) Catman!  viaAction Figure World.

Of course Catman?  We have nothing against him, but have to wonder how such a curious choice came about.  Are we missing something?
