The Dark Knight Rises had its world premiere tonight in New York, the real Gotham City, at AMC Lincoln Square Theater which will go into full release July 20th.

Actors Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman as well as director Christopher Nolan, brother and co-writer Jonathan Nolan, composer Hans Zimmer and others dazzled on the red carpet.

“Yeah, it’s bittersweet, but I think though that Chris is such a good storyteller, if he says it’s the right time to finish, it’s the right time to finish,” Bale told E! News at the premiere. “It’s nice to leave when we’re out on top instead of leaving people wanting less.”

Fans who were unable to attend in person could enjoy a live video stream on the Legendary Pictures website. Some of the twitter feed focused on early negative reviews at Rotten Tomatoes (“This is why we can’t have nice things”) but most fans were focused on the celebs, and certainly the fashions. Some of the women were understandably partisan on the relative merits of Anne Hathaway and Marion Cotillard.

“Anne Hathaway’s a vision in something white with a grecian back but didn’t catch the designer.”

“Figured the french woman would dress better”

“”Hate to be catty but Marion Cotillard is a fashion don’t on The Dark Knight Rises Premiere red carpet. Silhouette of a… paper doll?”

“yeah, not loving that white swan dress on her.”

While others noted Hathaway – delightfully long-haired in TDKR – now has her hair cropped uber-short for her next role as Fantine in Les Miserables.

The Dark Knight Rises is Christopher Nolan’s third and final installment of his Batman trilogy, starring Christian Bale (Batman/Bruce Wayne), Anne Hathaway (Selina Kyle/Catwoman), Tom Hardy (Bane), Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, and other Nolan alums Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard, released by Warner Bros. July 2012

TDKR’s Gary Oldman: Photo Booth Antics at the Empire Award

If there’s a downside to the avalanche of awesome that’s come from The Dark Knight Rises camp, it’s that everything and everyone involved seems to take the whole business a little too seriously.  With one striking exception:

This much-needed episode of brazen silliness provided by Gary Oldman, who plays Jim Gordon in Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, Christopher Nolan’s third and final installment of his Batman trilogy, released from Warner Bros July 20.

TDKR’s Tom Hardy in This Means War

Did anybody know Tom Hardy had another movie coming out?   Compared to his last release  The Warrior, not to mention his Dark Knight Rises costars Anne Hathaway in One Day, Marion Cotillard in Contagion and Gary Oldman in Harry Potter and the Deathy Hallows, Part II and  Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Hardy’s newest called This Means War from 20th Century Fox is basically in stealth release.

Internet Movie Database Synopsis: Two top CIA operatives wage an epic battle against one another after they discover they are dating the same woman.

The low profile is  perhaps  understandable, as the survey of reviews from metacritic are pretty dismal:

Nearly totally laugh-, chemistry- and coherence-free, this fiasco from the director of “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” has a script whose sensible parts would fit on a napkin with enough room left over for the Gettysburg Address.

Newest Stills from TDKR

Last week saw a few new stills from The Dark Knight Rises, touted as “the first view of the Batcave.”  It isn’t exactly.  But it’s Christian Bale in front of the Bat Suit in its case and Gary Oldman in front of a brown stoneish wall.  Tom Hardy again.  We think Bane is a promising villain but we can’t really see the fascination with another close up.  Or another long shot for that matter.  We get it.  He’s… Bane.

Get used to it: TDKR’s Gary Oldman and Tinker Tailor will be all over this years Awards Season

gary-oldman-commissioner-gordon-in-the-dark-knight-rises-stars-in-tinker-taylor-soldier-spy-darling-of-2011-awards-seasonThe Dark Knight Rises promo may be all Batman, Bane, and Catwoman, Bale, Hardy, & Hathaway, but the quiet, life-size, hardworking James Gordon still maintains an extraordinary presence, thanks in no small part to the brilliant actor who plays him, Gary Oldman.  Oldman is one of the rarities in Hollywood, who will go from starring roles to supporting ones and back again.  His latest starring role is in the remake of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, sure to be a darling of the awards season.  It begins here, with the American Society of Cinematographers.

We’ve been reporting a lot lately about awards nominations from various movie industry guilds, and with the Directors Guild nominees already out there, we’re pretty much done with the guilds that accurately predict Best Picture nominees. But that doesn’t mean it’s not fun to pore over the picks by the American Society of Cinematographers, who picked their nominees for their annual Oustanding Achievement Awards, and of course, selected some of the most gorgeous films to be released in theaters in the last year. Here is the list nominees, via Indiewire:

Guillaume Schiffman, The Artist
Jeff Cronenweth, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Robert Richardson, Hugo
Hoyte van Hoytema, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Emmanuel Lubezki, The Tree of Life

Oscar nominations are announced on January 24.
