Batman Relaunch cover leaked already? Twitter seems to think so but…

DC Comics Relaunch must do right by Batman and Catwoman to capitalize on The Dark Knight Rises

The twitterverse woke up this morning circulating a Batman cover alleged to be Batman #1 for DC Comics September Reboot of all characters and relaunch of all titles.

The Batman Universe website displaying the cover has labeled it honestly and correctly: it is possibly the cover and artist Greg Capullo is possibly the new Batman artist.  But the 140 characters minus link of a regulation tweet  doesn’t leave room for disclaimers, and qualifiers don’t get you retweets.

To be fair, that is certainly a Jim Lee Batman design, so the claim that it is a cover is credible–although it leaking so soon is somewhat unlikely. The resemblance to the Jim Lee Batman from Hush would be a spanking good idea as the wildly popular graphic novel by Jeph Loeb featured a Batman and Catwoman romance, and the pressure is on DC Comics to get Batman and Catwoman right to capitalize on The Dark Knight Rises as they failed to with Christopher Nolan’s last outing, The Dark Knight.  A visual similarity to the Hush Batman is smart, although the Hush Catwoman’s costume would be fatal.  Rocksteady ran into unexpected pushback for choosing the fan-loathed goggle costume for Batman: Arkham City, the highly anticipated sequel to Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Catwoman costume aside, the artist is of minor importance as capturing the visual tone of the movie is not a make-or-break for the relaunch.  When writers are announced, their attitudes and editorial mandates will be key to the success of this do-or-die endeavor.
