The TDKR Catwoman Spoiler hidden in plain sight

Anne Hathaway, Selina Kyle in The Dark Knight Rises
via Cat-Tales

After all the sturm und drang about Catwoman’s costume, none of us paid as much attention as we should have to those set pictures of Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle. Just look what she’s reading in this candid shot.

The Dark Knight Rises is Christopher Nolan’s third and final installment of his Batman trilogy, starring Christian Bale (Batman/Bruce Wayne), Anne Hathaway (Selina Kyle/Catwoman), Tom Hardy (Bane), Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, and other Nolan alums Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard, to be released by Warner Bros. July 2012

Liam Neeson “confirmed” in The Dark Knight Rises – kinda

liam-neeson-confirmed-in-the-dark-knight-rises-kinda

Officially Confirmed? Or is he?

The enthusiasm to be found on fan sites is a joy of this business, but it can create all kinds of confusion because fans and bloggers love to use journalist words when they “break a story” but they don’t really know how to use them the way journalists do.  Consider the news that Liam Neeson has been “officially confirmed” as returning as Ra’s al Ghul in The Dark  Knight Rises.

In June of 2011, Variety reported that he was would be: Liam Neeson back for ‘Dark Knight Rises’  but Warner Bros. wouldn’t comment.  It was enough to put him on the Internet Movie Database page as “rumored.”  When he was spotted near the location shooting in England, the rumors got a little more interesting, since it was at a location where, let’s say, Ra’s al Ghul should not be.  We began to suspect maybe Mr. Nolan was playing a deeper game than the fans are giving him credit for.  (Considering the number of them that still haven’t figured out Inception, we hold to our belief that none of the leaked facts and images fit together in the way they think.)

In January, it got interesting.  Neeson Liam told something called “showbizspy.com”

“I can tell you nothing about Dark Knight Rises, seriously. I was on set for maybe an hour-and-a-half and the director didn’t tell me anything of what it’s about. So, I’m being very honest when I say I have no idea what’s going to happen.”

Now, translating that, he confirmed it was him on the set, which considering he was talking to some outfit called “showbizspy.com” was very big of him.  At this point, we at Gotham Trending still wouldn’t discount the possibility that he was just invited to lunch by his old friend Nolan, just to mess with us.

But wait, now he is starring in Wrath of the Titans and the good chaps over at ComicBookMovies.com are all a-twitter because it says in the promotion materials:

“Neeson next appears in Peter Berg’s actioner Battleship, and he also will be seen in Christopher Nolan’s much-anticipated action thriller “The Dark Knight Rises.”

which they interpret as “official confirmation” that he “will be reprising his role as Ra’s al Ghul.”

We hate to throw cold water in anyone’s faces, but to a studio, the mere use of his voice in the first trailer covers that.  This is Hollywood, there’s a union, there are rules.  They use his voice from the first film, Warner Bros. cuts a check, and he’s in the credits, he’s in the film.  Alas, we know nothing more than we did before.  (Or, happily we know no more than we did before, because some of us really feel seeing the movie the first time is better that way.)

One thing is certain, we’ll only really find out in July.

Newest Stills from TDKR

Last week saw a few new stills from The Dark Knight Rises, touted as “the first view of the Batcave.”  It isn’t exactly.  But it’s Christian Bale in front of the Bat Suit in its case and Gary Oldman in front of a brown stoneish wall.  Tom Hardy again.  We think Bane is a promising villain but we can’t really see the fascination with another close up.  Or another long shot for that matter.  We get it.  He’s… Bane.

“Sorry to spoil things, boys…” Did LA Times overstep on Anne Hathaway Catwoman interview?

LA Times Online’s “Hero Complex” is running an interview with Anne Hathaway where she “Talks The Dark Knight Rises Catwoman.”  As was noted on Twitter, what she actually does is perhaps more reminiscent of her Princess Diaries past, for as was said of the late Princess Diana, she demonstrates the art of saying (almost) nothing with great distinction.

Hathaway talks about the origin of her character in Batman #1 (and narrowly misses insulting Bob Kane in the process!) and its inspiration in screen actress Hedy Lamarr, said to be the most beautiful woman of her day, how she studied the actress for her performance, etc.  Standard actress stuff.  She repeats her defense of the disappointing costume, but she reveals no specifics about her character or the plot.  She merely makes general comments about Selina and her ties to Gotham City, and how any individual Catwoman ties to a creator’s version of the city.

LA Times Interview with The Dark Knight Rises Catwoman Anne Hathaway contains major spoilers

Hathaway herself spoils nothing.  LA Times columnist Geoff Boucher, on the other hand, describes a scene and plot point in detail.   He opens with it so you’ve read it before you knew what was coming.  (An advisory has since been added to the top of the article.)

Could Warner Bros., Christopher Nolan and producers have known this was coming when they gave him access?

Readers are advised to avoid this interview and remain unspoiled, but if you absolutely must, follow the link to the full Hero Complex material.

Dark Knight Rises Set Photos: More pics from TDKR location shooting in NYC, LA and Pittsburgh

Everyone who is anyone knows Gotham City is New York, but creating the imagery for The Batman’s City is too big a job for one city to handle.  Christopher Nolan primarily used Chicago for the first two films, but for The Dark Knight Rises has used parts of London, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, and of course Manhattan.

Below find assorted pictures from the multi-city location shooting to supplement those archived elsewhere throughout this blog.

(AP) – The entrance to Trump Tower, renamed Wayne Enterprises, is shown on Fifth Avenue, Friday, Oct. 28, 2011 in New York. The building, or at least this one entrance, will stand in for part of the new Wayne Enterprises HQ in The Dark Knight Rises, Christopher Nolan’s third and final installment in his Batman trilogy, starring Christian Bale (Bruce Wayne/Batman), Anne Hathaway (Selina Kyle/Catwoman), Tom Hardy (Bane), Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard.

Many cities, including London, Pittsburgh, and parts of Los Angeles have stood in for sections of Gotham in this installment, while previous Nolan films have relied mostly on locations in Chicago.  Since Gotham is New York City, it is fitting that at least some location shooting was finally done here.

New Set Photos from The Dark Knight Rises: Christian Bale/Bruce Wayne looking very Wall Street and Joseph Gordon-Levitt looking very much like a cop

New set photos from the location shooting of The Dark Knight Rises, the third and final installment of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy.  Everyone knows Christian Bale is Bruce Wayne.  Up until now, there has been only wild speculation about the role Joseph Gordon-Levitt is playing, but it seems like we can guess he is playing a policeman.  (Maybe.  It is Nolan.)

Candid set photos: Batman, Catwoman, Commissioner Gordon from the set of The Dark Knight Rises

No news here, just a fresh batch of candid set photos from The Dark Knight Rises, Christopher Nolan’s third and final installment of his Dark Knight trilogy, featuring Batman and Catwoman (Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway) in full costume with Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman) pictured in some.  Now that all the excitement has died down about Catwoman’s costume, it looks like a fun set.  (We assume it’s Christian Bale and not Batman who’s doing all that smiling and laughing.)

Crews Dig Hole In Downtown Street For ‘Batman’ « CBS Pittsburgh

With Catwoman tearing up the streets on the Batpod, Batman in the Batwing, possibly chasing down that fleet of camo-painted tumblers, what could be next?

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Excitement is growing for the filming of a major scene in the new “Batman” movie.

A local construction company was asked to dig a large pothole on a downtown street for the movie.

Among the ordinary pot holes on Cherry Way is one much bigger. Will it soon play host to the “Bat Mobile?”

“This hole is approximately 16-[feet] by 18-[feet] and about six-feet deep,” Steve Zottola of Zottola Construction said.

Zottolla said work got under way on Aug. 6 to dig the hole. He was given little information on what it would be used for during the filming of “The Dark Knight Rises.”

Photo Gallery: The beautiful Marion Cotillard

The beautiful star of Inception, Public Enemies and Big Fish will play Miranda Tate in Christopher Nolan’s third and final installment of  his Batman trilogy Dark Knight Rises starring Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, and Morgan Freeman.  The world recently got its first look at her on set during the location shooting in Pittsburgh, but she is surely much lovelier out of character in these photos.  We are indebted to Breakfast with JL for this lovely gallery.

The Dark Knight Rises location video: Tumblers, Tumblers, Tumblers

The third and final installment of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy The Dark Knight Rises is currently filming in Pittsburgh. A great deal of amateur video has been captured and shown on YouTube. On all videos, assume spoilers. If you don’t want to risk it, don’t watch. If you want to peak behind the curtain before and see what happens before the movie magic is applied, enjoy:

In this video:  the first time TDKR watchers spotted a tumbler, they all cried “Batmobile.”  Somehow we didn’t think so.  Now that this fleet of camo’d vehicles have become familiar sights around Pittsburgh, it’s become clear those are enemy forces.  Can The Dark Knight triumph over his own tech?

There are a number of photos and video from a distance of Tom Hardy’s Bane at Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field doubling for Gotham Stadium in The Dark Knight Rises.  These close-ups are much better.
