The Dark Knight Rises outpacing The Avengers according to Fandango – Advanced Ticket Sales Selling out across the country

dark-knight-rises-ticket-salesNolan’s Dark Knight Rises Currently on Track to Become One of Fandango’s Top-Selling Movies of All Time

LOS ANGELES — July 19, 2012 –Fandango reports that “The Dark Knight Rises,” on the eve of its opening weekend, is outpacing the summer blockbuster “The Avengers” in ticket sales at the same point in the sales cycle. The final chapter of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy has sold out on Fandango more than 2,000 showtimes nationwide and it’s currently on track to become one of Fandango’s top-selling movies of all time.

“Thursday’s ticket sales are incredibly strong, as film fans are flocking to
Fandango to guarantee their seats for the film’s opening weekend,” says Rick Butler, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Fandango. “The IMAX showtimes are particular fast-sellers, as almost every one of our Thursday midnight IMAX showtimes have been sold out. The good news is that theater owners are continually posting new showtimes on Fandango to meet the fan demand, so tickets are still available.”

“The Dark Knight Rises” currently accounts for 91% of daily ticket sales, selling out coast-to-coast from big cities like New York and Los Angeles, to smaller towns like Sunrise, Florida to Puyallup, Washington. The film also promises to be one of Fandango’s all-time top mobile ticket-sellers, with nearly 30% of the site’s fans on Thursday using Fandango’s mobile site and apps to buy their tickets in advance.

Fandango is currently featuring a wealth of editorial content on “The Dark Knight Rises” at http://www.fandango.com/thedarkknightrises/movieguide, from exclusive video interviews with the film’s stars including Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway, premiere videos and photos, free music downloads, prize pack giveaways, and “The Dark Knight Rises” Virtual Theater — where fans can win a movie tickets for a year at http://www.facebook.com/fandango.

Earlier in the week, Fandango surveyed more than a thousand “Dark Knight Rises” ticket-buyers, and found that 97% said the darker tone made them more interested in seeing the movie. In addition, 89% claimed the new villain, Bane, made them excited to see the film; 72% consider themselves fans of director Christopher Nolan; and 62% said they’re anxious to see it because more than an hour of the film was shot in IMAX.

Earlier this month, Fandango announced it had achieved its best quarter in the company’s 12-year history, with a 28% year-over-year surge in second quarter ticket sales, a 26% year-over-year increase in second quarter traffic, and its highest number of mobile tickets sold in one quarter, with mobile purchases up 107% year-over-year. In addition to record-setting ticket sales for “The Avengers,” Fandango also signed new distribution deals with AOL’s Moviefone, MSN and Yahoo, as well as AMC Theatres, Regency Theatres, and a long-term renewal with Carmike Cinemas.

Breakout

Fandango, the nation’s leading moviegoer destination, sells tickets to nearly 20,000 screens nationwide. Fandango entertains and informs consumers with reviews, commentary, celebrity interviews and trailers, and offers the ability to quickly select a film, plan where and when to see it, and conveniently buy tickets in advance. At many theaters, fans can print their tickets at home or receive them as a paperless Mobile Ticket on their smartphones.

Legendary Live Stream lets fans visit the TDKR Red Carpet Premiere

The Dark Knight Rises had its world premiere tonight in New York, the real Gotham City, at AMC Lincoln Square Theater which will go into full release July 20th.

Actors Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman as well as director Christopher Nolan, brother and co-writer Jonathan Nolan, composer Hans Zimmer and others dazzled on the red carpet.

“Yeah, it’s bittersweet, but I think though that Chris is such a good storyteller, if he says it’s the right time to finish, it’s the right time to finish,” Bale told E! News at the premiere. “It’s nice to leave when we’re out on top instead of leaving people wanting less.”

Fans who were unable to attend in person could enjoy a live video stream on the Legendary Pictures website. Some of the twitter feed focused on early negative reviews at Rotten Tomatoes (“This is why we can’t have nice things”) but most fans were focused on the celebs, and certainly the fashions. Some of the women were understandably partisan on the relative merits of Anne Hathaway and Marion Cotillard.

“Anne Hathaway’s a vision in something white with a grecian back but didn’t catch the designer.”

“Figured the french woman would dress better”

“”Hate to be catty but Marion Cotillard is a fashion don’t on The Dark Knight Rises Premiere red carpet. Silhouette of a… paper doll?”

“yeah, not loving that white swan dress on her.”

While others noted Hathaway – delightfully long-haired in TDKR – now has her hair cropped uber-short for her next role as Fantine in Les Miserables.

Top Posts of the Week – Bane who? It’s all Bale, Bruce, Anne and Selina this week

Catwoman, Selina and Anne Hathaway have always been dominant terms in Batman-related searches, for reasons that should be obvious to anyone familiar with the character and the internet’s collective interest in beautiful and sexy women.  We’ve still never seen a complete shut out of Bane since the character was announced.  The balance shifts between Batman/Bruce Wayne/Christian Bale, Hathaway/Selina/Catwoman and Tom Hardy/Bane, and any picture or video pairing Bruce and Selina soars to the top of our popular posts.  But we’ve never seen Bane fall completely from the top 10, and the fact that a Joker t-shirt made it into the top 10 posts and  Riddler Converse was the highest ranking non-TDKR search, we’re starting to worry about the big guy’s self-image.

Batman, Catwoman, Bane Character Posters, US and International release

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

There are two new trios of posters for The Dark Knight Rises, one for the U.S. market and one for International release.  Those distinctions may have met something before the internet, but today, we all enjoy both.  Christian Bale as Batman, Tom Hardy as Bane in a starker costume than the open tan trench we have seen, and Anne Hathaway in the regrettable goggles but with enough detail now showing in the texture of her costume that we see its similarity to Batman’s.  Hmmm.

Maybe to make it up to her, there is one additional poster featuring Catwoman, from the knee down.  Reowl.

The Dark Knight Rises unveils first TV Spots

The first TV spots for have debuted for The Dark Knight Rises Christopher Nolan’s third and final installment of his Batman trilogy, starring Christian Bale (Batman/Bruce Wayne), Anne Hathaway (Selina Kyle/Catwoman), Tom Hardy (Bane), Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, and other Nolan alums Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard, to be released by Warner Bros. July 2012

In this, the second official TV Spot, we get a better look at the flying tumbler and Anne Hathaway in full Catwoman gear, but even naughtier and more splendid as Selina Kyle. Eight years after Batman took the fall for Two Face’s crimes, a new terrorist leader, Bane overwhelms Gotham’s finest, and the Dark Knight resurfaces to protect a city that brands him an enemy.

The Dark Knight Rises is Christopher Nolan’s third and final installment of his Batman trilogy, starring Christian Bale (Batman/Bruce Wayne),  Anne Hathaway (Selina Kyle/Catwoman), Tom Hardy (Bane), Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, and other Nolan alums Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard, to be released by Warner Bros. Top Posts of the Week – Batman and Catwoman still dominate the Top 10

The real life Batman pulled over in his Lamborghini certainly got everyone’s attention, as did a new round of photos released from The Dark  Knight Rises.  But overall, Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway, Batman and Catwoman, Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle are still the overwhelmingly popular keywords.  Bane and Tom Hardy made a showing, although interest seems to wane after the push of a photo is over.  A pity Arkham City didn’t understand that also rans like Marion Cotillard and Gary Oldman never make it into the top 50.

Christian Bale and Morgan Freeman Faux TDKR set audio

christian-bale-and-morgan-freeman-faux-leaked-set-audio A collection of spoofed conversations between Christian Bale and Morgan Freeman on the set of The Dark Knight Rises has been getting some light buzz on youtube.  The humor is inconsistent across the 7-video series, but the highs are very high, and while the Morgan Freeman impression is only so-so, the Christian Bale voice has received raves.

”Morgan, just between us, were you asked to be in Inception?”

After Dark Knight Rises: Christian Bale team up with Nolan’s other leading man in Out of the Furnace

christian-bale-after-dark-knight-risesThe project after the box office-busting blow-out is always an important decision for a Hollywood actor, particularly one with the Academy Award-winning chops of Christian Bale. The answer comes in the project of Christopher Nolan’s other leading man, Leonardo DiCaprio. Cinema Blend reports on Bale’s next picture Out of the Furnace, which DiCaprio was rumored to be developing as a vehicle for himself.

Finally reprieved from its grueling sentence in developmental hell, the gritty drama Out of the Furnace has at last secured its cast. Relativity Media is proud to announce that Christian Bale, who has been attached to the project since last August, has finally signed on the dotted line, along with Casey Affleck, Zoe Saldana, and Sam Shepard, to front the film that will serve as writer-director Scott Cooper’s follow-up to his Oscar-winning directorial debut, Crazy Heart.

Originally titled The Low Dweller and penned by insurance salesman-turned-screenwriter Brad Ingelsby, Out of the Furnace has since been polished by Cooper, who showed his capability to craft compelling characters with Crazy Heart. Here, Bale will star as Russell Baze, a tough customer who tries to forge a path for himself and his younger brother Rodney (Affleck) in the poverty-stricken Rust Belt. The two aspire for better lives, but when a cruel twist of fate lands Baze behind bars, his little brother falls in with a dangerous crowd and suffers a terrible fate. Four years later, when Baze is finally released from prison, he must choose between a fresh start or a more treacherous path, seeking justice for his wronged brother. Saldana will play Bale’s love interest, Lena Warren, while Shepard is slated to portray the brothers’ uncle, Red.

As an Oscar-winner who is poised to break box office records once more with The Dark Knight Rises, Bale has his pick of projects so his inclusion here bodes well for Out of the Furnace on many levels. Add to that Affleck and Shepard, who are both Oscar nominees—for The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and The Right Stuff, respectively—and you’ve got a solid trio of acclaimed actors at the film’s core. As for Saldana, it’ll be intriguing to the stunning actress in something outside the genre features in which she’s best known.

Relativity’s Co-President, Tucker Tooley, is certainly enthusiastic about the cast, declaring:
“This is a meaty script with characters as strong as they are complex, and we needed powerhouse actors who complement the story. Christian, Casey, Zoe and Sam each approach everything they do with heart and conviction. We can’t wait to see what each of them brings to this film.”

Beyond star power, Out of the Furnace also has some incredible producers on board. Leonardo DiCaprio, who was once rumored to being grooming the picture as a vehicle for himself, is producing along with Jennifer Killoran (The Ides of March), Ridley Scott (The Grey), Tony Scott (Man on Fire), Michael Costigan (American Gangster) and Ryan Kavanaugh (The Fighter). With a line-up like this you can bet Relativity’s hoping Out of the Furnace will draw major box office and some serious acclaim.

Top Posts of the Week: Bat and Cat edge out Bane again

It could be the first big Comic Cons of the year pushing up the searches in Cosplay, but it seems like even before that, Batman and Catwoman, Bruce and Selina, Bale and Hathaway were slowly edging Tom Hardy and Bane out of the top spots.  When we began these surveys, Bane always dominated the top spots.  Now he is consistently 3 or 4, with fewer appearances than Bat and Cat.

The Dark Knight Rises to be Front and Center at CinemaCon

the-dark-knight-rises-front-and-center-at-show-westIndieWire has observed that the old National Association of Theater Owners (NATO) convention in Las Vegas has changed in more substantive ways than altering its name from ShoWest to CinemaCon.  The change reflects the changed relationship between the Hollywood studios that present there and the theater-owners themselves.  The neighborhood movie house has been reduced from the One and Only contact point between a movie and its audience to one of many options “now that consumers are demanding access to on-demand video content on multiple platforms.”  With the change in distribution came a change in marketing.  A movie like The Dark Knight Rises has so much life before and after those few weeks in the summer of 2012, it cannot be sold the way, say, Tim Burton’s Batman was in 1989.  That leaves studios in a delicate position with theatre owners: still important but no longer the burning sun at the center of the marketing and distribution universe.

Both are invested in a priceless commodity: audiences sitting alone in the dark. As producer Jim Stark once told me: “Nothing beats five weeks of good word-of-mouth.”

Thus it’s in the studios’ interest this year, especially, to make nice with exhibition. Besides, the studios know that any upbeat buzz out of CinemaCon on their summer movies will go viral. It’s a win-win. (On the other hand, bad word on movies, especially those freighted with high expectations, can be toxic.)

The Dark Knight's christian-bale-christopher-nolan-cinemaconNaturally, with the most anticipated movie of 2012 on its docket, Warner Bros. was the first studio to announce its CinemaCon program:

As part of their annual “State of the Industry” featuring MPAA Chairman & CEO Christopher Dodd and NATO President and CEO John Fithian, on Tuesday April 24th at 9:30am Warners will hawk its summer product for the second year in a row, with WB president Jeff Robinov, Distribution chief Dan Fellman, and International Distribution head Veronika Vandenberg on hand to intro:
“The Dark Knight Rises”—Directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, and Morgan Freeman.

Predictably, fan sites like Batman-News began fueling hopes of “new footage.”  While it is a possibility, it’s a remote one.  The fanboy’s mistaken desire to know more than is good for them before the film opens and their propensity to misunderstand any gathering ending in the letters “Con” is at work.  While it’s true that in 2008, Christopher Nolan, Christian Bale, and Maggie Gyllenhaal were trucked out to show footage from The Dark Knight, including the prologue, that material was rolled out previously as part of The Dark  Knight Why So Serious/I Believe in Harvey Dent viral.  That is where studios like Warner Bros play their big cards in the 21st century: on the Internet stage, in the twitterverse, the blogospher, and across the social networks.

Top Posts of the Week

Yesterday, Today and probably through to July, it’s Batman, Catwoman and Bane – Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway and Tom Hardy – in the #1, 2 and 3 spots.  The only question for a month has been which particular story or picture will light up the net this week.  Not surprisingly, it’s Mr. Bale looking oh so suave in character as Bruce Wayne, and Ms Hathaway out of character in a see-through blouse.  Mr. Hardy is more popular on set, in the photos from last summer’s location shooting in Pittsburgh, than in any of the officially released studio stills.

Top posts of the week: Batman and Catwoman finally defeat Bane

For the first time since the public location shooting began in Pittsburgh, Tom Hardy’s Bane was not in the top five search terms, which this week is dominated by Christian Bale (Batman/Bruce Wayne) and Catwoman in two forms:  Anne Hathaway/Selina Kyle in the Dark Knight Rises, and the Arkham City Catwoman, with an emphasis on player dissatisfaction with her costume and portrayal in the sequel to Batman: Arkham Asylum.
