For the first time since the public location shooting began in Pittsburgh, Tom Hardy’s Bane was not in the top five search terms, which this week is dominated by Christian Bale (Batman/Bruce Wayne) and Catwoman in two forms:  Anne Hathaway/Selina Kyle in the Dark Knight Rises, and the Arkham City Catwoman, with an emphasis on player dissatisfaction with her costume and portrayal in the sequel to Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Fine, call us sexists.  We at the Gotham Trending office try to remain impartial but we are men, and seeing Catwoman, Anne Hathaway and Selina Kyle beating Bruce Wayne, Christian Bale and Batman week after week for the top spot in his own movie, we can’t help it.  We can’t help but root for the underdog and we can’t help but cheer now that Bruce/Christian/Dark Knight has finally won the day.

Batman Merch: Bane shirts aren’t TDKR but they’re better than the first wave of Dark Knight Rises stuff we’ve seen

There is a folder on our harddrive in the Gotham Trending office called “Merchandise Hell.”   We’re not proud of the title, but the fact is nobody wants to follow those links and write up bits on the New 52 busts, the latest round of Arkham City figures, or DC Direct’s 12″ statues for The Dark Knight Rises.

It’s not just that a lot of the stuff is hideous, it’s not just that DC was obviously kept in the dark about Catwoman’s real TDKR costume but didn’t let that stop them since they went into production on last summer’s first photo with the goggles and no ears, it’s not just that Pop Heroes vinyl Bane looks like her cat’s chew toy, it’s that no item is so horrible that the article, blog or website won’t fawn over it.   One or two of these embarrassments to the fandom can be shrugged off, but a steady diet is a strain.

You can imagine our delight, then, at this set of Bane-inspired t-shirts from Superhero Hype.  They’re all based on the comic book Bane from Knightfall, but they’re nice shirts.  There’s nothing wrong with them.  I just ordered a “Got Venom.”

More than offering up a nice collection of shirts, they have restored our faith in the fandom.  Not everyone is still chugging that year-old Kool-Ade that Anne Hathaway is playing Selina Kyle who isn’t Catwoman.

With the expected glut of Top Everything of 2011 lists and post-holiday lull in news, there was a fallback on older pictures and stories, such as Christian Bale “looking incredibly GQ as Bruce Wayne” and pre-TDKR Anne Hathaway looking unspeakably sexy in a see-through blouse, as well as set photos of Tom Hardy’s Bane from the location shooting in Pittsburgh, and a smattering of old stories on the Batmobile and Arkham City disappointments.  The only exception was the LA Times lack of discretion spoiling a scene from The Dark  Knight Rises just to set the scene for an Anne Hathaway interview.

Arkham City’s took the top spot from The Dark Knight Rises this week, but Warner Bros. probably wishes it didn’t.  Back in May, the game got off to a terrible start with Catwoman, offending fans with a costume that was instantly proclaimed an “Epic Fail.” It was portent, because the revelation with the games release that Catwoman is a downloadable add on with little contact with Batman or impact on the main story has many fans crying Bait and Switch, and googling ‘bait and switch’ in conjunction with various arkham-related keywords.

Alright, updating information on the Catwoman skins for those of us who haven't been living and breathing these games for years.

First: the explanation on "only with a new game" -  Catwoman is a downloadable pack that comes with both the animated series and long halloween skins.  if you bought the game (ie it is new) then you will get a code in the package to get that download pack for free.

We think Catwoman looks sexiest in purple and are grateful not only for the awesome TLH costume but for this simple information clearing up so much confusion about how to acquire it.  This post includes gameplay video of the B:TAS skin in action, but no spoilerage that wasn't seen at E3 and elsewhere.

Filming for Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises has upstaged most Batman news in recent months, even when it’s not doing anything set photos from the location shooting in Pittsburgh, of Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman or Tom Hardy’s Bane continue, Bruce Wayne’s Lamborghini and Batman’s Batmobile to generate interest even when there is no fresh news.  But this past week, the news of Arkham City’s Catwoman coming with downloadable skins, a frenzy of searches as to how to acquire and apply them, and the release of Catwoman #2, the second issue of DC Comics heart-stoppingly sexy rebooted Catwoman comic have all but shut TDKR out of the Top tier of net activity.

At long last: There will be Alternative Catwoman Costumes (skins) in Arkham City

It was touch and go if Rocksteady would deal with the fact that the goggle costume DC Comics had sold them on for Catwoman had negative connotations for a substantial portion of the fanbase, or if they would follow DC’s lead and simply ignore fan dissatisfaction and pretend it isn’t so, or indeed to actively punish them for it.   The release of alternative costumes (skins) for all other playable characters and former comic editor Paul Dini’s involvement in the project,  led many fans to assume the worst.  But the latest word on the Arkham City forums indicates otherwise.  There will indeed be Catwoman skins, and not as a limited pre-order perk but as an unlockable feature of the game.

GamesMaster’s review (96/100) featured a snippet of info on Catwoman’s attire. Telling readers to “Unlock her Long Halloween costume ASAP”  As well as this NeoGAF user Jintor claims that The Animated Series Catwoman is “in the game” and although not spotted as a skin notes that the 3D model definitely exists in the game.

So, it looks like Catwoman will be gaining a range skins just like Robin and Bats. What ones would you want to see?

What unlocks it?  Nobody seems to know yet, at least in the forum.
What fans want to see?  Well Purple seems to be leading by a mile:  The Jim Balent Costume, also called the Iconic Purple Catwoman and 90s Catwoman, the Classic Skirted Costume, and The Long Halloween are popular choices, although the gray outfit from Batman the Animated Series has also got a few votes.

Why I’m passing on Arkham City

Some in the blogosphere and twitterverse have been obediently passing along all Rocksteady’s promotional materials about Arkham City, the sequal to the justly popular Batman: Arkham Asylum.  But not everybody is preordering their copy for next month’s release.  Some aren’t even excited.  Some are downright pissed.

The Epic Fail of Catwoman’s Costume has been discussed at length.  The fact that they have alternate skins for EVERY OTHER PLAYABLE CHARACTER EXCEPT HER only adds insult to injury.  Let’s move on to other major figures.

Penguin looks like an Orcish overseer in that getup. He looks like Grishnakh! “Wot about their legs? They dun need those! Oo they look taaasteey!”

Riddler looks like the dude from the 40 year old virgin after a bad divorce: he’s been dumped, stopped shaving, started chainsmoking.  Looks like he smells like cheap cologne and Jack Daniels.

Batman Achievements Confirm New Game-Plus in Arkham City

Hardcore gamers at DragonCon are excited to hear game achievements in Batman Arkham City, the sequel to the popular Batman Arkham Asylum.

Crack achievement investigators Xbox360Achievements.org are back in action, and they’ve sleuthed out the 50 Achievement/1000 Gamerscore set for Batman: Arkham City. Included are two achievements speaking to a New Game Plus mode, which will allow a second playthrough with your fully upgraded Batman. Pore over the others, and then see Kirk’s impressions from PAX and mine from Comic-Con to see if any of them concern details we haven’t seen. (Hint: There are, and not just in the obvious story-chapter achievements.)

Arkham City is to have 3 playable characters: Batman, Catwoman and Robin, and so far the main extras announced have been alternate skins to create alternate costumes for Batman and Robin.  Fans really want to know if a Catwoman skin will be offered, as the fan’s disappointment with her goggled costume got the game’s early promotion off to a rocky start.

The week saw the much anticipated release of The Real, Official, Accept No Substitutes ACTUAL teaser trailer for The Dark Knight Rises, a (possibly staged) peek at the Batmobile as TDKR Production wheeled into Pittsburgh to begin location shooting, the sale of iconic Batman movie memorabilia including a Bane mask and Jim Carrey’s riddler hat and cane, AND the first look at the Batman ’89 Hot Toys line for Comic Con.  Yet Catwoman astonishingly held 4 places on the top ten list: Catwoman in DC Comics reboot, Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises and Catwoman in Arkham City.  Way to go, Miss Kitty.
