Legends of the Dark Knight: Jim Aparo Hardcover

Jim Aparo was quite simply The Batman Artist.  No one can pretend to be a connoisseur of comics or even a marginally informed Batman fan without knowing the name.  At a time when DC Comics is struggling to prove it values and appreciates its own history, is struggling to redeem itself in the eyes of alienated fans, what better way than to assemble a hardcover that will both reach out to those fans and educate the new generation that have been sadly bamboozled by the overhyped sensations of the moment.

Pre-ordering now at Amazon.com for April 10 release.

Jim Aparo was one of the premier Batman artists of the 1970s, working primarily on the Batman team-up title THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD. Now, DC collects Aparo’s run on the series in hardcover for the first time from the beginning. Aparo portrayed Batman as a detective who operated in shadow, yet captured the action and thrills of the Caped Crusader.

These stories feature appearances by numerous DC heroes (and villains) including Robin, Green Arrow, Black Canary, The Teen Titans, Deadman, Wonder Woman, The Demon, The Joker, Aquaman, The Atom and many others.

It’s official: Tim Burton’s Catwoman is Iconic – Michelle Pfeiffer to receive Cinema Icon Award on the eve of a new Burton outing

Back when everybody knew Catwman was supposed to be sexy and it never would have occurred to anyone to toss around words like “practical” as if it were a good thing, a generation of boys became men watching Michelle Pfeiffer’s whip-wielding Selina Kyle in 1992′s Batman Returns.  Iconic does not begin to do her performance justice, but the Cinema Icon award is a start.

Batman Humor: Nope, not one word

When we started this blog to sift through all the Batman material trending on the Internet, it never really dawned on us that we’d need to make a special category for Batman humor. It seemed like the kind of thing that would pop up right after Arkham City came out, right around the time of The Dark Knight Rises trailer release, and then once the film opened. Little did we know. It’s April, been 4 months since the trailer came out and it’s still 3 months until opening weekend. And yet…

The TDKR Catwoman Spoiler hidden in plain sight

Anne Hathaway, Selina Kyle in The Dark Knight Rises
via Cat-Tales

After all the sturm und drang about Catwoman’s costume, none of us paid as much attention as we should have to those set pictures of Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle. Just look what she’s reading in this candid shot.

The Dark Knight Rises is Christopher Nolan’s third and final installment of his Batman trilogy, starring Christian Bale (Batman/Bruce Wayne), Anne Hathaway (Selina Kyle/Catwoman), Tom Hardy (Bane), Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, and other Nolan alums Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard, to be released by Warner Bros. July 2012

Top Posts of the Week

Yesterday, Today and probably through to July, it’s Batman, Catwoman and Bane – Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway and Tom Hardy – in the #1, 2 and 3 spots.  The only question for a month has been which particular story or picture will light up the net this week.  Not surprisingly, it’s Mr. Bale looking oh so suave in character as Bruce Wayne, and Ms Hathaway out of character in a see-through blouse.  Mr. Hardy is more popular on set, in the photos from last summer’s location shooting in Pittsburgh, than in any of the officially released studio stills.

Liam Neeson “confirmed” in The Dark Knight Rises – kinda

liam-neeson-confirmed-in-the-dark-knight-rises-kinda

Officially Confirmed? Or is he?

The enthusiasm to be found on fan sites is a joy of this business, but it can create all kinds of confusion because fans and bloggers love to use journalist words when they “break a story” but they don’t really know how to use them the way journalists do.  Consider the news that Liam Neeson has been “officially confirmed” as returning as Ra’s al Ghul in The Dark  Knight Rises.

In June of 2011, Variety reported that he was would be: Liam Neeson back for ‘Dark Knight Rises’  but Warner Bros. wouldn’t comment.  It was enough to put him on the Internet Movie Database page as “rumored.”  When he was spotted near the location shooting in England, the rumors got a little more interesting, since it was at a location where, let’s say, Ra’s al Ghul should not be.  We began to suspect maybe Mr. Nolan was playing a deeper game than the fans are giving him credit for.  (Considering the number of them that still haven’t figured out Inception, we hold to our belief that none of the leaked facts and images fit together in the way they think.)

In January, it got interesting.  Neeson Liam told something called “showbizspy.com”

“I can tell you nothing about Dark Knight Rises, seriously. I was on set for maybe an hour-and-a-half and the director didn’t tell me anything of what it’s about. So, I’m being very honest when I say I have no idea what’s going to happen.”

Now, translating that, he confirmed it was him on the set, which considering he was talking to some outfit called “showbizspy.com” was very big of him.  At this point, we at Gotham Trending still wouldn’t discount the possibility that he was just invited to lunch by his old friend Nolan, just to mess with us.

But wait, now he is starring in Wrath of the Titans and the good chaps over at ComicBookMovies.com are all a-twitter because it says in the promotion materials:

“Neeson next appears in Peter Berg’s actioner Battleship, and he also will be seen in Christopher Nolan’s much-anticipated action thriller “The Dark Knight Rises.”

which they interpret as “official confirmation” that he “will be reprising his role as Ra’s al Ghul.”

We hate to throw cold water in anyone’s faces, but to a studio, the mere use of his voice in the first trailer covers that.  This is Hollywood, there’s a union, there are rules.  They use his voice from the first film, Warner Bros. cuts a check, and he’s in the credits, he’s in the film.  Alas, we know nothing more than we did before.  (Or, happily we know no more than we did before, because some of us really feel seeing the movie the first time is better that way.)

One thing is certain, we’ll only really find out in July.

Batmobile Race: 89 v 66 which would win?

All serious Bat-fans know the eye-sore bat-tank introduced in Batman Begins is no proper Batmobile, so it didn’t even make the running for the Race of The Batmobiles.  The contenders were the 1989 version from the Tim Burton movie and the convertible of the 1966-67 Adam West movie and TV series.  If the new millenium Batman would like to take on the winner, we suggest Bruce Wayne lend Batman his Lamborghini.

The Dark Knight Rises in Lego Form

There have been a number of spoofs and parodies of The Dark Knight Rises trailer since it was released in December, some well done, some not.  Some putting a unique spin on the material, some… well, we never quite got the point of that thing with the cat-heads or all the footage from The Lion King.  Lego Batman, however, that we get.  Enjoy:

Batman of Maryland’s Batmobile Bust A Real Hero | NPR

batman_of_batmobile_bust_a_real_hero

"Eventually, it sinks in and you become him. It feels like I have a responsibility that's beyond a normal person. And that responsibility is to be there for the kids, to be strong for them, and to make them smile as much as I can.'

This week saw a fascinating story of a Maryland man pulled over in a Lamborghini dressed like Batman.  Since Bruce Wayne in the Christopher Nolan movies drives a Lambo, the story got a lot of social network traction, a few discussing the story but most using it as a jumping off point to refer back to The Dark Knight and hopes for The Dark Knight Rises.

Let’s face it, the Lamborghini is more of a Batmobile that that retarded Bat-tank.  -reddit

Luckily, the good people at NPR were among those who actually read the details of why the driver, Lenny B. Robinson, was dressed as Batman in the first place.  Turns out this rich Lambo-driving Batman is also quite a hero:

After the news broke that police in Montgomery County, Md., last week stopped Batman for not having the correct plates on his Batmobile, many naturally wanted to know more about the man behind that mask.

The Washington Post today profiles the mysterious Caped Crusader, and it turns out that he does seem to be something of a real life hero to sick children around Washington, D.C.

Lenny B. Robinson is a “self-made success” in the business world who is giving back some of his good fortune by donning his disguise and then heading to local hospitals to see sick kids and deliver presents “to up-and-coming superheros who first need to beat cancer and other wretched diseases.”

The Post’s Mike Rosenwald, who knows Robinson, went along on one of the hospital visits. His report is one of the feel-good stories of the day. Robinson, Rosenwald says, has taken on some of the mythical crime fighter’s attitude:

” ‘Eventually, it sinks in and you become him,’ Batman told me. ‘It feels like I have a responsibility that’s beyond a normal person. And that responsibility is to be there for the kids, to be strong for them, and to make them smile as much as I can.’ He understands that might sound corny, but he doesn’t care.”

TDKR’s Tom Hardy in This Means War

Did anybody know Tom Hardy had another movie coming out?   Compared to his last release  The Warrior, not to mention his Dark Knight Rises costars Anne Hathaway in One Day, Marion Cotillard in Contagion and Gary Oldman in Harry Potter and the Deathy Hallows, Part II and  Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Hardy’s newest called This Means War from 20th Century Fox is basically in stealth release.

Internet Movie Database Synopsis: Two top CIA operatives wage an epic battle against one another after they discover they are dating the same woman.

The low profile is  perhaps  understandable, as the survey of reviews from metacritic are pretty dismal:

Nearly totally laugh-, chemistry- and coherence-free, this fiasco from the director of “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” has a script whose sensible parts would fit on a napkin with enough room left over for the Gettysburg Address.

The Dark Knight Rises Gary Oldman’s “Out of Character” portrait as Oscar Nominee

the-dark-knight-rises-gary-oldman-oscar-photo-by-douglas-kirkland

Oscar®-Nominated Actors Step "Out of Character" for Academy Portrait Exhibition

All the Oscar nominees for an acting Academy Award were captured by legendary Hollywood photographer Douglas Kirkland, including The Dark Knight Rises‘ own Commissioner Gordon, Gary Oldman, nominated for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.  While figures such as George Clooney and Brad Pitt seem very much their usual selves, others like Oldman are revealed in a truly new light in the aptly named portrait exhibition “Out of Character.”

Oscar®-Nominated Actors Step “Out of Character” for Academy Portrait Exhibition

Beverly Hills, CA — The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present “Out of Character,” a new exhibition featuring portraits of this year’s acting nominees by photographer Douglas Kirkland. The exclusive new photos of 2011′s Oscar-nominated performers will be on display starting Saturday, February 11, in the Academy’s Grand Lobby Gallery in Beverly Hills.

Kirkland photographed all 20 of the Best Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress nominees in the two weeks since the January 24 nominations announcement. His distinctive, large-format portraits will be on display through March 18. An online gallery of these portraits, along with behind the scenes shots, will be spotlighted at www.oscar.com beginning today.

Following the exhibition, the portraits will become part of the Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library photograph collection.

Kirkland has been capturing iconic images of motion picture luminaries for more than five decades, revealing as well as immortalizing such legends as Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Orson Welles, Audrey Hepburn and Paul Newman. Also well known as a set photographer, he has worked on more than 100 films, including “The Sound of Music,” “Out of Africa,” “Titanic” and “Moulin Rouge.” He recently traveled to Australia to serve as special set photographer on Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby,” scheduled for release in 2012.

“Out of Character” will be open Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekends from noon to 6 p.m. Admission is free. The Grand Lobby Gallery is located at the Academy’s headquarters at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills.

Academy Awards® for outstanding film achievements of 2011 will be presented on Sunday, February 26, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.

Oldman has played James Gordon in the two previous Christopher Nolan Batman movies (Batman Begins and The Dark Knight) was well as the upcoming Dark Knight Rises, which is indicative of the actor’s ability to go from starring roles like Tinker, Tailor to supporting ones like those in the Batman and Harry Potter series.
