The low profile is  perhaps  understandable, as the survey of reviews from metacritic are pretty dismal:

Oscar®-Nominated Actors Step "Out of Character" for Academy Portrait Exhibition

All the Oscar nominees for an acting Academy Award were captured by legendary Hollywood photographer Douglas Kirkland, including The Dark Knight Rises‘ own Commissioner Gordon, Gary Oldman, nominated for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.  While figures such as George Clooney and Brad Pitt seem very much their usual selves, others like Oldman are revealed in a truly new light in the aptly named portrait exhibition “Out of Character.”

Beverly Hills, CA — The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present “Out of Character,” a new exhibition featuring portraits of this year’s acting nominees by photographer Douglas Kirkland. The exclusive new photos of 2011′s Oscar-nominated performers will be on display starting Saturday, February 11, in the Academy’s Grand Lobby Gallery in Beverly Hills.

Kirkland photographed all 20 of the Best Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress nominees in the two weeks since the January 24 nominations announcement. His distinctive, large-format portraits will be on display through March 18. An online gallery of these portraits, along with behind the scenes shots, will be spotlighted at www.oscar.com beginning today.

Following the exhibition, the portraits will become part of the Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library photograph collection.

Kirkland has been capturing iconic images of motion picture luminaries for more than five decades, revealing as well as immortalizing such legends as Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Orson Welles, Audrey Hepburn and Paul Newman. Also well known as a set photographer, he has worked on more than 100 films, including “The Sound of Music,” “Out of Africa,” “Titanic” and “Moulin Rouge.” He recently traveled to Australia to serve as special set photographer on Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby,” scheduled for release in 2012.

“Out of Character” will be open Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekends from noon to 6 p.m. Admission is free. The Grand Lobby Gallery is located at the Academy’s headquarters at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills.

Academy Awards® for outstanding film achievements of 2011 will be presented on Sunday, February 26, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.

Oldman has played James Gordon in the two previous Christopher Nolan Batman movies (Batman Begins and The Dark Knight) was well as the upcoming Dark Knight Rises, which is indicative of the actor’s ability to go from starring roles like Tinker, Tailor to supporting ones like those in the Batman and Harry Potter series.

Michael Uslan, The Boy Who Loved Batman

It’s unusual to see “a suit” i.e. an executive producer, one of the money men, as a featured guest at a comic book convention.   If they appear, it certainly wouldn’t be anything announced in the opening paragraph of a press release.  But Michael Uslan is no ordinary producer, he is “The Boy Who Loved Batman,” and as his book by that name chronicles, he is the man who trusted that boyhood love to bring The Dark Knight to the big screen when nobody, absolutely nobody, thought there was any merit in the idea of making a movie about Batman.

Since September 2011, the locally based Comic Book Classroom (an after school program teaching underserved children to read through comics) has gradually built an impressive roster of talent for their largest fundraiser to date – Denver Comic Con. Set to take place at the Colorado Convention Center in trendy downtown Denver, the benefit boasts a high caliber celebrity lineup coupled with education and literary opportunities spanning the five days surrounding Father’s Day weekend.

In just a few short months, CBC has amassed over 275 local volunteers for the pop culture conference, highlighting the best and brightest artists of Denver and from around the world, with an array of programming opportunities, colorful exhibitions, and the recent addition of Tokyo Japan’s own Manga University (Manga Publisher and educator). Denver Comic Con also boasts visually appealing appearances from the cosplay community (elaborately costumed capers), video gaming competitions, workshops, autograph signings, and special programming, all culminating in a fan-centric awards ceremony on the last day of the con. All of the proceeds raised from the Denver Comic Con will benefit the CBC, which is currently active in 8 Colorado area schools.

Throughout the weekend the comic convention will feature an overwhelming number of celebrity guests ranging from the red carpet to the book publishing bullpen. With a number of respected names already listed, the convention is putting its best foot forward for its first year including Kristen Bauer best known as Pam, the icy, foul-mouthed, scene-stealing vampire on HBO’s hit series, True Blood. The three day event will also feature Michael Uslan, best known for his Hollywood credits in the Batman franchise such as the The Dark Knight and the much anticipated trilogy-ending finale, The Dark Knight Rises. He is a perfect fit for the con as he is an authority on comic book history as instructor of the first accredited university courses on comic books (Indiana University 1971) as well as the first textbook on comic books (The Comic Book in America).

The Denver Comic Con will also feature a number of big guns from the animation world including star voice actors Billy West and Tom Kane. West is best known for his voice-work on Ren & Stimpy, Doug and Futurama where he originated fan favorites, Philip J. Fry (Futurama) and Stimpy (Ren and Stimpy). Tom Kane, best known as the Voice of Yoda in Star Wars The Clone Wars, has a tremendous vocal range that has led to a busy career. Every week, he records literally dozens of movie trailers, commercials, network TV promos, video games and cartoons. In addition to voicing Yoda, he has voiced lead roles in The Powerpuff Girls, Robot Chicken, Kim Possible, The Avengers, Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, Iron Man, The Wild Thornberrys, Wolverine and the X-Men and many more. Lastly, Colorado’s own Steven T. Seagle will be returning to Denver for a spotlight appearance at the con. Seagle is a comic book and television writer known for his work as the creator of the international boys’ action series BEN-10 franchise and his numerous shows are part of regular programming on the Cartoon Network and in a forthcoming series from Marvel/Disney.

Preceding the Denver Comic Con on June-13th-15th, event producers are also hosting a one-of-a-kind literary conference featuring keynote speaker Scott McCloud and special guests, James Bucky Carter, Robert Weiner and Charles Hatfield for the inaugural Rocky Mountain Conference on Comics and Graphic Novels at the Hyatt Regency directly across from the Convention Center. Attendees will have the opportunity to discuss the academics of graphic storytelling with some of the nation’s top comic-centric literary talent and scholars.

Bane (Tom Hardy) exhorts Gotham City to Remember Harvey Dent

We don’t know what Bane is saying holding up that picture, but we suspect he wouldn’t like the message on the FriendsOfHarveyDent.org website, formerly the “fundraising arm of the Harvey Dent campaign for District Attorney” repurposed as a memorial and launched today, February 2nd (2/2, wouldn’t Two-Face have loved it.)

“The night is darkest just before the dawn. And I promise you, the dawn is coming.”  ”Harvey reminded us that WE are the answer.” “Gotham is a city of Hope and Heroes.”

Harvey Dent exhorted the people of Gotham not to give in to fear, not to give in to terrorism.  Bane, we’re a humble group of bat-bloggers, but it really doesn’t seem to us that it’s the best line to take for a guy standing on a camo-tank-car surrounded by a half-dozen thugs with machine guns.

It’s not just that a lot of the stuff is hideous, it’s not just that DC was obviously kept in the dark about Catwoman’s real TDKR costume but didn’t let that stop them since they went into production on last summer’s first photo with the goggles and no ears, it’s not just that Pop Heroes vinyl Bane looks like her cat’s chew toy, it’s that no item is so horrible that the article, blog or website won’t fawn over it.   One or two of these embarrassments to the fandom can be shrugged off, but a steady diet is a strain.

You can imagine our delight, then, at this set of Bane-inspired t-shirts from Superhero Hype.  They’re all based on the comic book Bane from Knightfall, but they’re nice shirts.  There’s nothing wrong with them.  I just ordered a “Got Venom.”

More than offering up a nice collection of shirts, they have restored our faith in the fandom.  Not everyone is still chugging that year-old Kool-Ade that Anne Hathaway is playing Selina Kyle who isn’t Catwoman.

(January 27, 2012)–Marvel Studios announced today that they will be sponsoring a Global Twitter Chat on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at 11 a.m. (PST) with cast members and the director of their highly anticipated action-adventure “Marvel’s The Avengers,” opening in theaters on May 4, 2012. The 30-minute live tweeting event features writer/director Joss Whedon and cast members Tom Hiddleston and Clark Gregg.

Fans around the world will be able to participate in the Q&A on Twitter by using the @Avengers handle and the #Avengers hashtag. Participating fans will have the opportunity to see a 10-second tease of the 30-second Super Bowl spot that will air during Super Bowl XLVI on February 5 on NBC. So what if it’s not Batman, it’s a viral for a superhero movie!

1. Batman and Robin is a 1997 superhero film directed by Joel Schumacher. Based on the DC Comics character Batman, staring George Clooney. Even him once admitted Batman & Robin, the schlocky 1997 superhero movie that jump-started the actor’s career, was lame. Now director Joel Schumacher’s steaming heap of cinematic dung has been voted the worst film ever by readers of Empire magazine. Atempting to pick out just one bad scene from Batman & Robin is impossible, and it certainly wouldn’t do justice to just how painfully awful the rest of it is. The film is so dreadful that director Joel Schumacher actually apologized for it on the DVD commentary. That’s right, the man who proudly made 8MM, The Number 23 and Cousins thought Batman & Robin was so bad that it warranted an apology.

Did you expect something else to be in the number one spot? If so, shame on you. Batman: Arkham Asylum is easily the best Batman video game ever made, and a perfect use of a well-established license by Rocksteady Studios. Arkham Asylum had everything a Batman fan could ask for: phenomenal graphics, excellent voice work, an amazing combat system, proper use of Batman’s detective reasoning, and a boatload of cool gadgets.

But Batman: Arkham Asylum isn’t just a game made for the Bat-fanatics. Arkham Asylum is a great game period. It was runner-up only to Uncharted 2: Among Thieves for our game of the year back in 2009.
